Rich culture, history focus of celebrations
The Kwinana community has been celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people this week.
The City of Kwinana is hosting a range of activities and events for NAIDOC Week ahead of national celebrations starting on Sunday.
The week officially kicked off with the NAIDOC Opening Day at Darius Wells Library and Resource Centre on Monday.
Hundreds turned out on the chilly but sunny morning and participated in a traditional smoking ceremony before flags were raised by respected Aboriginal elders and their grandchildren.
A welcome to country was then conducted by elder Marie Taylor, followed by performances, a presentation of awards and the opening of the Albert Windie Art Exhibition.
This year’s theme is Songlines — the living narrative of the nation, with a focus on the importance of dreaming tracks in Aboriginal and Torres Strait culture.
City of Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams said the week was an opportunity to come together and recognise those in the community who worked tirelessly preserving the stories and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait people.
“As one of the oldest continuing cultures in the world, we are proud to celebrate NAIDOC Week each year in Kwinana,” she said.
Still to come is the free Kwinana Little Peeps NAIDOC Ball, from 6-8pm tonight, a documentary screening on Thursday and the Moorditj Koort NAIDOC Ball on Friday night.''''''
