Riders take on new track
Rockingham BMX Club hosted round 9 of the Smarter than Smoking BMX WA Super Series on Sunday, with almost 500 competitors in attendance.
Club riders from across WA from as young as two made the journey for the second-last race of the series.
More than 500 spectators lined the track for a great day of action-packed racing.
Rockingham BMX Club riders raced well, with many making it through to the finals.
Hayley Hughes, 13, finished second in her final, while Joel Flower (17-29 men), Brayden Colledge (18+ men’s cruiser) and Josh Smart (15 boys’ elite) finished in the top eight of their respective classes.
The club has undergone much change in the past two years and the redesigned track proved to be technically difficult for the pro class and a challenging but achievable track for all ages.
The new facility, which features a 5m start hill, was made possible by grants from the City of Rockingham, local sponsors and the State Government.
The Rockingham BMX Club has been operating for nearly 40 years and is run solely by volunteers.
Members race every Thursday evening under lights from 6pm at the track on Ennis Road.
Club secretary Michelle Dunlop said BMX was a great family sport where everyone could be involved.
“We have mini wheelers, who are from ages two to four, sprockets from five to seven, and then both male and female age categories up to the pro women and pro men.
“We welcome any new enquiries or members.”
