Rockingham festival a flavourful foodie haven

Ellie HoneyboneSound Telegraph

Visitors and residents are in for a tasty treat this Saturday when the City of Rockingham's International Food Festival kicks off on the Village Green.

The inaugural event is part of the City's Summer Series and more than 1000 people expected to attend the unique afternoon of international eats.

Visitors will be able to sample Spanish, Moroccan, Italian, French, Egyptian and Malaysian foods among others and enjoy live performances from Silver Clefs Harmony Chorus, Taoist Tai Chi Society of Australia and Bailey O'Donnell.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the event would be an interesting new concept for the community. "We have received so much interest from residents about the festival that City officers had to double the number of food trucks and supporting amenities for visitors," he said.

"We were not expecting so much support for what was originally going to be quite a small, local event but we hope events like this will build capacity, cultural awareness and community connections."

Peter Bogar and his fiancee Erika Molnar are the owners of The Rare Flower - an authentic Hungarian food truck that is just one of the many delicacies that will be rolling into Rockingham for the festival. Hungarian born and raised, the couple believe food is an important part of their culture.

"We are passionate about food and sharing that food with other cultures is the perfect way to communicate through a common language," Mr Bogar said.

"We spent some time travelling throughout Hungary in the last few years, collecting recipes and talking to friends and family and then we returned and created a menu for the truck.

"We believe in everything being fresh, simple and honest and we serve the same food we used to eat on the beach as kids.

"Our food is definitely something everyone should try; it is hard to find Hungarian cuisine in Perth." The International Food Festival will take place from 12-4pm on the Village Green, Flinders Lane. For more information contact the City on 9528 0333 or email customer@rockingham.wa.gov .au.
