Rockingham prove too good

Rockingham Rugby Union Football Club had a stellar win at the weekend, smashing Perth Bayswater on their home turf by 43 points.

The team were relentless at Lark Hill Sportsplex, scoring 50 points to Perth Bayswater’s seven on Saturday to take the win.

A-Grade coach Rex George said the team had a slow start to the game but found their feet in the second half.

“The boys played really well,” he said.

“Our set pieces went really well and that laid the platform for our backs.”

George said the return of last year’s captain AJ Smith, after playing rugby in London, and the introduction of Jordan Young was a solid addition to the team.

He said it was pleasing for Smith to get back out on the ground with the boys and Young performed well on the flank.

George said next weekend’s game against Nedlands would be an interesting test.

“It will be a top of the table clash so it will be a good measure to see where we are,” he said.

“Nedlands are a very strong club so we are looking forward to it.”

Unfortunately, the B-grade side did not share the same joy, going down to Perth Bayswater 30-14.

B-grade coach Manaia Mutu said the boys had improvements to make.

He said the team needed to work on key aspects of the game including handling the ball and putting pressure on their opponent.
