Rockingham RSL prepares for Anzac Day service

Rockingham RSL is going ahead with its Anzac Day service after a two-year hiatus due to COVID restrictions, this will be the first service held by the RSL since 2019.

All Rockingham residents are invited to attend the dawn service at 5.30am at the Village Green on Flinders Lane in Rockingham, with the main service and march starting about 10.20am on Rockingham Beach Road.

The Rockingham and Port Kennedy RSL will, unfortunately, remain closed due to COVID-19 restrictions on capacity at this time.

Rockingham RSL sub-branch president Ian Brook is nonetheless happy to see the service go ahead, especially with this year’s commemoration of ‘Animals in the World Wars’.

“For this year’s Anzac service we are celebrating the animals in the World Wars,” Mr Brook said.

“This year they have brought out purple poppies for the animals, we will have red as well.”

He said only a single horse returned from World War I.

“The rest of them were killed over there,” he said. “We are looking after the animals this year.”

Those planning on attending the service are encouraged to follow COVID-19 regulations, including masks and social distancing where possible.

For a gold coin donation poppies will be available to purchase from April 21 at Waikiki and Rockingham shopping centres and from Bunnings Rockingham from April 22.
