Rockit are heading to the Rockingham Hotel for a series of gigs bassist Peter Borg hopes will boost the city’s live music scene.

Borg, of Mandurah, said he was looking forward to returning to the pub for three gigs in April and May.

“We’ve played at the Rockingham Hotel quite a bit,” he said.

“It’s an older hotel and I personally really enjoy it.

“I think Rockingham has been lacking currently with live music, and we’re happy to assist the Rockingham Hotel build up a regular crowd.”

Borg is joined by front woman Kat Lamb, guitarist Nick Mellor and drummer Wayne Robinson.

They formed Rockit in 2011 after finding a gap in the market for a female-led rock band.

“Kat’s younger than the rest of us, but is still into that classic rock genre. She’s very good,” Borg said.

“We thought Perth needed something a little different.

“Most of the female-led bands do top-40 music, but there is a niche there for people who enjoy some old-school pub rock.

“Some of the oldies include Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, with new songs from Pink and Katy Perry.”

Borg said Rockit continued to produce original material, and the band enjoyed playing their own songs and covers.

“We’re aware Perth audiences can be a little fickle at times, so we cater for a commercial scene,” he said.

“We are not strictly a cover band and not strictly an original band.

“We’ve been around long enough to see the pitfalls of both and we know we need to be versatile.”

Borg’s love of music began when his uncle taught him to play the guitar when he was eight years old.

He said he still dreamed of making it a career.

“We’d all drop our jobs in a heartbeat,” he said.

“Right now it’s all about fun.”

Borg said the band, who considered each other family, enjoyed each other’s company and playing to crowds.

“When they sit and applaud, it’s a great feeling — you know you’re doing something right,” he said.
