Rollers rock at Adelaide slam
The Dread Pirate Rollers are skating on a high after returning from the Great Southern Slam in Adelaide earlier this month where they finished fifth out of 24 teams.
The Kwinana-based roller derby squad took part in the Slam which, with five tracks running simultaneously, is the world’s largest roller derby tournament.
This was the first year the Rollers had been invited to play in the three-day event on June 11-13 and the local side finished up with three wins and one loss.
Rollers president Melissa Rayner said the whole team was pretty impressed with their results.
“We were really excited just to attend and stoked to end up so competitive,” she said.
‘We competed against teams from all over Australia and New Zealand and it was an amazing atmosphere.”
The Rollers had 18 members travel interstate and hope to get more skaters interested in the sport.
The squad is holding a “Fresh meat: information session today from 6pm at The Zone in Kwinana. New skaters aged over 18 are welcome to attend.
In addition to the information session, the Rollers are hosting a learn to skate event on Saturday from 3.30pm, also at The Zone.
The Rollers are hoping to start up a gender-nuetral team to join the female side.
