Running enthusiasts are encouraged to lace up their sneakers for the Rockingham Triathlon Club’s Kira Cup on Sunday.

The Cup is a charity event which features a 21.1km half-marathon event and 10km and 5km fun runs along the Rockingham Foreshore.

Every year, the Cup raises funds for a worthy cause, with all proceeds from the 2016 event to be presented to the SOUL Soup Patrol.

Trophies will be presented to the winner and runner-up in each event and there will also be a 5km junior winner and runner-up award this year.

RTC member Mary Kruger said the Club was hoping for a fantastic turnout.

“The Kira Cup came about in 2014 when a long-term club member suggested we run a charity event to help a young girl called Kira with her ongoing health issues,” she said.

“Kira has just finished her treatment for leukaemia last week and was given the all-clear after over three years of treatment.

“We decided that each year the event would support a diffe-rent cause, with the 2015 proceeds going towards Kolbe College’s school building project in Bali.

“This year we chose the SOUL Soup Patrol, which serves nourishing meals to approximately 150 homeless people per week.

“We hope the proceeds will enable the Patrol to cover some of the costs of its monthly operations and continue to support those in need.”

The race fee for the Kira Cup is $10 for the 5km and 10km runs and $20 for the half-marathon event.

Competitors who are not members of Triathlon WA will need to pay for a race licence.
