Ruthless Rams take the Brumbies apart
The Rockingham Rams’ march towards the Peel Football League finals gathered further momentum following a 69-point demolition of Baldivis at the weekend.
A combined nine goals from forwards Dane Ugle and Dale Roberts provided the fireworks as Rockingham registered their 17th win from as many matches, 20.16 (136) to 10.7 (67).
With the minor premiership theirs for the taking, the Rams were ruthless in the opening quarter, booting seven unanswered goals.
They kicked further clear in the second term to hold an almost unassailable 67-point lead at the main break.
To their credit, the Brumbies lifted a gear after half-time and pulled themselves back into the contest with seven third-quarter goals.
However, Rockingham quickly put to bed any thoughts of a miracle Baldivis’ comeback with a solid fourth quarter.
The result cements the Rams as minor premiers ahead of this weekend’s clash with second-placed Waroona.
Rockingham have had the edge in the two meetings between the sides this year, although a Waroona win on Sunday is sure to have some impact on the Rams’ confidence on the eve of the finals.
Meanwhile, Centrals moved above Pinjarra in the race for fifth spot after accounting for Mandurah at Rushton Park.
In a low-scoring match, Centrals proved their own worst enemy in front of goal, but did enough to prevail, 6.18 (54) to 5.5 (35).
Baldivis’ loss to Rockingham opened the door for South Mandurah to grab third sport following a 60-point win over Halls Head.
Rod Tregenza took his season tally to 109 goals with eight majors in another dominant display for the Falcons.
In the league’s only other fixture, Waroona downed Pinjarra by 62 points, 11.12 (78) to 2.4 (16).
