Salvos extend Appeal

An army of red volunteers will line the streets this weekend for The Salvation Army’s annual Red Shield Appeal doorknock.

The Rockingham community was generous with its donations last year, raising up to $40,000, with corps officer Darrell Wilson saying he hoped for an even better result this year.

“I think anything over that would be great,” he said.

“We will probably have up to 200 people helping us out and a lot of schools and organisations around town.

“This brings an opportunity for partnership, and when people come together for a cause, it is very beneficial.”

Mr Wilson said donations made a difference to people’s lives.

“I get to see that in the work that I do — I get to see where the money is spent,” he said. “I guess if people are sitting at home and donating money they don’t always see the end result but people are very generous to us and I think it is because they believe in what we do.”

Mr Wilson said the organisation hoped this year to get people to collect at events.

“If there is anyone who is part of a sporting club or a social club that meets over the next few weeks and they want to collect for us then that would be wonderful,” he said.

“We still have plenty of areas left if people want to door knock.”

Mr Wilson said he believed the strength of a community was based on its weakest members.

“I want everyone to get in it together and build our community up,” he said.

“We are all in this together.”

The money raised is distributed to a network of Salvos social services across the State.
