Business manager of Mr Rental Rockingham, Karl Schicker tells JACQUI O’LEARY why his job at the Dixon Road store allows him to coach and mentor a dynamic team and still relax with a perfect cup of coffee.

Q: Tell me the biggest business challenge you’ve ever faced.

A: When I worked in a previous role, managing a large company through two ownership changes within 12 months.

A: Becoming a part of the great team at Mr Rental and being able to help our growing customer base and the wider community.

Q: What does leadership mean to you?

A: Leadership is being able to communicate a clear vision effectively and then developing the full potential of your team to achieve the desired goals.

Q: How has your leadership style changed over time?

A: As I’ve gained confidence and experience in my leadership I’m focusing more on mentoring of team members.

Q: What’s the best advice you were ever given?

A: Long time to hire, short time to fire.

Q: What do you wish someone had told you when you first started out?

A: Effective delegation is a powerful tool, you can’t do everything yourself.

Q: Which technology can you not live without?

A: My laptop is a vital tool for completing everything from daily business tasks to online training and video conferencing.

Q: Which business leader do you most admire?

A: I admire Bill Gates not only for his drive and determination, but more so for his philanthropic and humanitarian endeavours.

Q: How do you relax?

A: Squash, cycling, snorkelling and also spending time with friends and family.

Q: What are your interests outside of business?

A: I’m a passionate supporter of the Fremantle Dockers, I enjoy live music and I’m obsessed with producing the perfect coffee.

Q: What would you do to improve Rockingham?

A: Further development of the foreshore/tourist precinct and increased investment in community infrastructure.

Q: What do you hope Rockingham will be like in five years time?

A: A safe, friendly and vibrant city that adopts a proactive approach to development.
