Scholarships reward students’ dedication

Some of the region’s best and brightest university students were lauded last Wednesday as Murdoch University held a scholarship and prize night.

Although several prestigious awards were handed out, Rockingham mother-of-three Pau-la Innes scooped the Gary Holland and Val Payne memorial prizes.

These accolades were to recognise Ms Innes’ achievement in academic performance and excelling while undertaking a business internship in the area.

She said she had looked to upskill after losing a part-time bookkeeping job.

“I am very thankful for the many people who helped me through my learning journey,” she said.

“To stand here tonight and receive my awards is the culmination of five years of hard work.

“I am proud of what I have achieved, and so thankful for the recognition you have bestowed upon me.”

Eight students from the region were also awarded scholarships by the Rockingham Education Development Group.

The group is made up of prominent members of the community who raise funds in an effort to offer worthy students a $10,000 bursary towards their education.

REDG chairwoman Barbara Holland said the eight students receiving scholarships were worthy of assistance.

“It is fabulous to be able to give these students the opportunity to go to university — some of them couldn’t do it without financial help,” she said.

“It was so hard to choose from the nominations, especially as the students were specialising in lots of different disciplines.

“The group is proud to help the students achieve their aspirations.”
