Two Warnbro schools are joining forces to create a garden the whole community will enjoy.

Warnbro Senior High School Educational Support Centre is pitching in to ready planter boxes and soil for students at Koorana Primary School Education Support Centre to create a community garden.

Koorana PS education assistant Lisa Thomas said the collaboration between the two schools was beneficial for both and a great example of community spirit.

“Students from Warnbro SHS will develop landscaping skills by building and installing planter boxes as part of their building and construction program,” she said.

“The program will promote healthy eating and teach our students how to look after plants, how to be team players and give them responsibility and ownership over the garden.”

Koorana education support teacher Darren Wilson said students would benefit from the garden especially in terms of their behaviour.

“A lot of our students like to leave the class when they are upset; they don’t like being surrounded by four walls, so it will be a nice safe area for them to go to,” he said.

The youngsters will plant and look after a variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers in the garden. They will also maintain a worm farm and learn about recycling.

“We’re trying to spread planting out through the year so there will always be something in the garden,” Mr Wilson said.
