The search is on for people, groups and organisations that make a positive, active contribution to the Mandurah community.

The Active Citizenship Awards recognise and celebrate significant contributions to community life and active citizenship in all local government areas of WA.

Mayor Marina Vergone encouraged the community to nominate their local heroes for the 2017 Active Citizenship Awards.

“There are many people and organisations in Mandurah which make significant contributions towards enhancing our community life,” she said.

“Too often, these hidden gems go about making their contribution without being recognised, but now is the time to nominate and celebrate their important role in our community.”

Coodanup College teacher Coral Richards was one of the joint winners in the 2016 awards and was nominated by fellow members of the Mandurah Uniting Church.

She was recognised for her work in the Mandurah community, which also includes her efforts as part of the Peel Preservation Group.

“Finding out I was nominated was a lovely surprise and it was especially nice to know that people notice the work that I do,” she said.

“These awards are an acknowledgement from our peers that we are making this community a better place.

“There are lots of people out there that contribute to making Mandurah a wonderful city to call home and I encourage everyone to nominate those who are deserving.”

The award categories include Citizen of the year, youth citizen of the year, senior citizen of the year and active citizenship (group or event).

The winners will be announced at a special ceremony on Mandurah’s eastern foreshore on Australia Day, January 26.

The winners will be presented with a medallion and a certificate in recognition of their community pride and spirit, as well as a commemorative bronze plaque on the Honour Walk in Mandjar Square.

Nominations opened on September 19 and will close on October 31.
