It will be a ride for a reason later this year when Secret Harbour cyclists Team Fred embark on a two-day ride in memory of a friend who lost his battle with cancer.

Carl Connor, Chris Wilde and Alec Jones will ride more than 200km as part of the Perth Ride to Conquer Cancer in October, to raise funds in the name of Secret Harbour friend and businessman, Allen "Fred" Thomas.

Mr Wilde said the team of riders had taken part in the cross-country challenge for the past two years, but decided to dedicate this year's ride to father-of-one Mr Thomas, who died in May - a year after his diagnosis.

He said each rider had raised a portion of the $2000 each required to take part in the cycling challenge, but hoped to raise at least $12,000 from the proceeds of a ball planned for next month.

Team Fred supporter Cheryl Connor said members decided to take on the Ride to Conquer Cancer challenge in 2012 because each had lost a loved one to the disease.

She said the team had since thrown themselves into fundraising for event benefactor the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.

"This year is definitely the big one for Fred," Mrs Connor said.

"The ball, which will be held at Peel Manor House next month, has already sold out - we are all really looking forward to it."
