Self-published novels a new notch in long career

ARRAN MORTONSound Telegraph

After a decade-long career in the creative industries, including years spent on radio and a stint as the first Humphrey B. Bear, Baldivis man Graham Bowra has dedicated his retirement years to another lifelong passion — writing novels.

Bowra spends his evenings enthusiastically tapping away on his laptop, according to his wife and sub-editor Jan, working away on his third book.

His passion for writing was evident as Bowra explained the fantastical plot of his first, E.T.A — Estimated Time of Arrival.

His self-published novel is the tale of businesswoman Kate Cunningham and the enigma that ensues after she sets off from Sydney in the cockpit of her own aircraft and later arrives in Perth, only to discover she has been missing for a year and faces a rap sheet of police charges.

Bowra said the novel, available in paperback, combined elements of mystery, thriller, drama and romance.

“Lots of former radio personalities have written their life story, but I opted for writing fiction instead,” he said.

“I’ve always had an interest in aeroplanes and found that after writing out a quick version of the story, things started to develop from there.

“It sometimes comes as a surprise even to me, the twists and turns that the story takes.”

Bowra dedicated the book to his wife of 22 years, who had tirelessly looked over, checked and edited each of his works.

Mrs Bowra said she often had to encourage her husband to sleep, such was his dedication to his craft.
