The Rockingham Coastal Sharks junior development side are gearing up for the trip of a lifetime later this week.

A group of 40 players, aged 14 to 16, will descend on Geraldton, bringing the game of rugby league to the Mid-West city.

The junior sharks will act as ambassadors for the sport, alongside NRL legends Mario Fenech and Shaun Timmins.

The duo will take time out of their schedule to jet over to WA to promote rugby league.

Sharks junior director Tim Crowe was instrumental in organising the trip.

“I think this is massive for rugby league, in Geraldton there’s none there whatsover, so we saw this as an opportunity to promote it,” he said. “It also gives junior players an opportunity that they will never forget.

“They (Fenech and Timmins) will stay with us for the entire weekend.

“To have these players in the environment they’re going be in, with skills, drills and games, the boys will be able to feed off their experiences.”

The club will host a skills session on Saturday and play two demonstration games over the weekend.

“I believe these guys are going to experience something like an NRL team would going into a town like Geraldton,” Crowe said.

He said the trip would be an opportunity for rugby league lovers in Geraldton to get involved.

“We’re hopeful of a few people coming out to an open session, I’m sure there are a few rugby league fans up there just waiting to come down,” he said.

“If they’re available, we’ll throw them onto the field and get the ball in their hands.”

Crowe hoped to forge a link in Geraldton that would result in its senior and junior sides returning regularly.
