Sights set on council election

A Baldivis disabilities and youth advocate has launched a campaign to win a place on the City of Rockingham council.

At 20, Jordon Steele-John said he hoped to become the youngest person elected to the council, with a view to making a positive difference.

He said he wanted to bring a fresh perspective to the council and contribute to creating a sustainable and inclusive community. "I've worked extensively in the disability and youth sector, serving on the City of Rockingham Disability, Access and Inclusion Committee, Rockingham Youth Advisory Council and People with a Disability WA Committee of Management," he said.

"When whole-community access and youth facilities are properly integrated into infrastructure planning, the entire community benefits."

Mr Steele-John, who is working towards a bachelor of arts in politics through Macquarie University, said he believed the biggest mistake candidates made in all levels of Government was to tell voters what needed to be done.

He said he planned to meet with as many community groups as possible and listen to their concerns.

Rockingham's council election will be held in October, when half the 10 elected-member positions will become vacant, with nominations being called for an ensuing four-year term.
