Silver Belles in final

Sound Telegraph

Former Telegraph Newspaper reporter Sophie Hawkins wants you to scream for her team as she faces down some of Perth’s leading improvisers in the 2013 Theatresports grand final next month.

Improv rookies and veterans will battle it out for the WA Theatresports Championship Cup as they act out scenes and scenarios on the spot, inspired by audience suggestions.

Hawkins is part of the Silver Belles team with Chantelle Magnus, Hannah Rice and Brianna Williams.

“This is my first appearance in a Theatresports show since high school, so I’m excited to see if my Year 12 jokes still hit the mark,” she said.

“I haven’t been on stage in front of an audience in years so this is going to be a bit of a culture shock but hopefully that’s what will make it hilarious.”

Studying drama at high school, Hawkins enjoyed interpreting the works of playwrights Bertolt Brecht and Tim Winton and says her greatest dramatic achievement to date is bringing the role of Grandpa Joe to life in a Perth College production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

“As a Theatresports participant, I fiercely upheld my house’s tradition of hilarity and ensured 1980s rock music flowed through each performance,” she said.

“I like working with Just Improvise because, as a company, it helps you rediscover what it means to be yourself.

“There’s something unquantifiable about a Theatresports show because no one knows what’s going to happen, especially the performers.

The event, directed by Just Improvise’s Chris Bedding and Esther Longhurst, is supporting Parkerville Children and Youth Care. The 2013 Theatresports grand final starts 5pm on Sunday, December 1, at the Mount Lawley Bowling Club.

Tickets are $15 if providing a Christmas gift or $25 without.
