Sisters spread positive message
Big Brother’s “sugar sisters”, Katie and Lucy Mercer, took some time out to talk about positive image last week at South Coast Baptist College’s after hours education series, Mind, Body and Soul.
The positive image workshop gave girls from the area a chance to have some fun while learning about exercise, health, make-up and body image.
Event co-ordinator Joanna Gwynn said it was the school’s eighth Mind, Body and Soul activity and second positive image workshop since its beginning in 2011.
“The reasoning behind the workshop was simply to encourage and build up girls’ self-esteem in a relaxed and informal space,” she said.
“It is about helping them see the beauty within themselves.”
Rockingham’s very own TV stars Lucy and Katie Mercer said they were happy to help boost the confidence of young girls and share their experiences with body image.
“It is so important to give young girls and teenagers positive self esteem,” Lucy said.
“It is something Katie and I are very passionate about.
“We have been known for our positivity and our happiness and that is 100 per cent us and we just think if we can pass something on to younger generations at school then we’d be very happy with that.
“It is so important for the girls to know that beauty comes from within.”
College student Candice Smith, 12, said she had fun learning how to apply make-up and chatting to the sugar sisters.
“I learnt it is important not to believe everything you see in the magazines,” she said.
College principal Des Mitchell said being connected to the community was the school’s core business.
“In addition to curriculum programs specific to student’s needs, we enjoy our innovative community education series entitled Mind, Body and Soul,” he said.
