State titles lure big field
The patrolling season may be over for another year, but surf sports at Secret Harbour Surf Life Saving Club still carry on over the winter months.
Secret Harbour hosted the Surf Life Saving WA State Long Board Titles last Saturday, with about 30 competitors from around the State taking to the waves.
SHSLSC director of surf sports Deb Bird said conditions were trying to say the least.
“Big swell, combined with the wind conditions, meant it was challenging for some, if not all, that competed,” she said.
“We had four of our own club members display their skills, including local father-and-son duo Rohan and Bryce Pugh.
“The two surfers made the semifinals in the open male division and had to compete against each other to go through to the finals.
“Bryce got some gnarly waves and progressed through to the finals, where he finished second and took home the State silver medal, which was an awesome effort and great to watch.”
Next up on the surf calendar is the SLSWA Pool Rescue State Titles in July, with Secret Harbour expected to send about 30 competitors to compete.
Following that is the popular SLSWA State Short Board competition, which Secret Harbour will also be hosting in August.
