Storm unleashes fury

SOPHIE HAWKINSSound Telegraph

A severe winter cold front belted Rockingham and surrounding suburbs on Sunday causing widespread damage and power outages.

As residents got busy cleaning debris from their homes, the Bureau of Meteorology warned the worst was not over with another storm expected hit the coast on Tuesday evening.

Powerlines were felled in Rockingham, trees were uprooted across the south-west of the State and Garden Island experienced winds measured by the bureau at 117km/h, causing major headaches for emergency services.

Western Power had more than 3000 calls from Secret Harbour alone and said on Monday afternoon its crews were working hard to bring power back to 170,000 customers across the State.

With another severe winter cold front expected to pass through the south metropolitan area on Tuesday evening, more blackouts and further delays have been tipped.
