Students from the region enjoyed a day at the beach sculpting their own creations and viewing art in a whole new light last week.

Fifteen Year 6 art enthusiasts from Bertram Primary School took part in Alcoa’s 12th Education program at Sculptures by the Sea in Cottesloe.

Deputy principal Kiera Slade said it was a remarkable opportunity for students to see the sculptures and was grateful that the school had been included in the program.

“Giving students time to work with an artist and study the sculptures in depth gives them a deeper understanding of the artistic process and the opportunities that SBTS provides to artists across WA,” she said.

“It’s a wonderful chance for students to see art in a new and exciting form and to expose students to life outside of a gallery.”

The creative youngsters participated in a practical sculpture workshop, were taken on a focus tour and met with artist Elyssa Sykes-Smith, whose creationThe Break Wall was exhibited this year.

“It’s quite the change for them to be able to walk on, around, underneath the art pieces, to talk about them, photograph them, touch them and experience them in an entirely different light,” Ms Slade said.

The school is one of 12 to be included in the program where Alcoa operates, with Orelia Primary School, North Parmelia Primary School and Calista Primary School also participating.
