Students get taste of Olympic competition

Emily SharpSound Telegraph

The spirit of the Olympics was emulated at a Baldivis school last Friday with flags, a torch and 14 sporting events.

Tranby College held its second Olympic Day with former Olympian and now teacher Jen Reilly organising the day to give students a taste of what it is like to be part of the world’s biggest sporting event.

Students enjoyed an opening ceremony complete with a Parade of Nations, Athletes’ Oath and the Olympic Torch Relay.

They then went head-to-head representing 24 countries in a number of events including fencing, archery and a revised version of synchronised swimming. School principal Dr Clayton Massey said it was inspiring to see how the students had taken to it and the sportsmanship they showed.

“It’s about the excellence of the Olympics and the journey — there are so few opportunities for people to come together and celebrate achievements, so it’s great for the kids,” he said.

Ms Reilly attended the 2000 and 2004 Olympics as a medley swimmer and said it was nice to be able to share her experiences.

“The Olympics is something that is very close to my heart having competed myself, so it’s nice to bring my experience to the kids and teach them about sportsmanship and having a go,” she said.
