Students give back to community

Tranby College students proved their ability to lend a helping hand last month, raising thousands for the Smith Family’s Kwinana Learning for Life program.

Students were first connected to the organisation this year and volunteered in its learning programs for disadvantaged children.

Smith Family Learning for Life Kwinana team leader Mandy Grubb said 24 students from the school volunteered weekly at the organisation’s Kwinana learning clubs, and a further 10 students volunteered for its Student2Student program in the second and third terms, up to three times a week.

Ms Grubb said students were inspired by the program and decided to donate money raised at the school fair to the cause.

“The school raised an amazing $8000 for our clubs,” she said.

Student Maria Perez, 16, said she enjoyed being a part of the experience.

“It feels good, and it is also develops your character,” she said.

Smith Family WA general manager Greg Ryan-Gadsden said he was encouraged by a school making the decision to get involved in the community.

“I think it makes for well-rounded people; it is not just about academics it is what you do for your community,” he said.

“They have raised an incredible amount of money and it will make a difference to families in the area.

“The money raised will specifically go to providing resources for these clubs, including books, games, iPads and afternoon tea for the students.”

Smith Family program co-ordinator Katie Heath said the students involved had done their school proud.
