Students’ ice castle melts back to water

ELISIA SEEBERSound Telegraph

Lasting one day and two hours, an ice castle built by Hillman Primary School students was deemed a success.

Science teacher Tracy Hill said she set the task to build the ice castle because students were learning about chemical science.

“Students are learning about solids, liquids, and gas — in this instance, a liquid turning to a solid and back to a liquid,” she said.

Miss Hill said part of the task was for students from Years 1 to 7 to predict how long it would take for the ice castle to melt.

She said students made predictions from 100 days to 10 minutes.

“The student with the closest prediction will win a prize,” she said.

Miss Hill said students from every year level were asked to bring in an ice block to create the castle.

“I’m really proud of the effort,” she said.
