Students sing in seventh tour

Children from across the globe with different languages were brought together through music in Secret Harbour last Wednesday.

Students of Secret Harbour Primary School were delighted to meet members of Rockingham’s sister city, Ako Children’s choir, who were on their seventh tour of the city.

The choir showcased a set of songs in English and Japanese as a part of their five-day trip.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the tour was a unique opportunity to build goodwill with Japan through the sharing of cultural and educational knowledge.

“We are looking forward to the City of Ako’s Mayor, Motohide Akashi visiting next year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our Sister City relationship and the opportunity to reaffirm ties of friendship,” he said.

Secret Harbour Primary School was one of several schools picked for the choir to visit because of its strong music program.

Music teacher Katherine Anson said nearly a third of all students in the school were involved in one of its three choirs.

“It’s great they came to our school as it is an example of a choir from another country and supports our music program through appreciation,” she said.
