Students take to the streets

ELISIA SEEBERSound Telegraph

Students and parents across Rockingham and Kwinana pounded the pavement on Friday, swapping mum’s taxi for the footpath.

Friday marked National Walk Safely to School Day and parents and students were out in force on the streets, encouraging healthy behaviours and road safety.

Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School were one of many schools which took park in the day.

Physical education teacher Bernado Garrote said it was the first time the school had taken part in the initiative for a while.

“I think it is a great initiative, it encourages parent’s, carers and students to be active even though it is a promotional thing, hopefully it becomes a habit for students,” he said. “Especially with the current climate of high obesity and the new digital revolution, a lot of children are becoming a lot more sedentary and I guess the focus on physical activity is important.

“It is also a good way to reinforce road safety and the kids love it.”

Across Rockingham, students were also treated to a nutritious breakfast with a range of fruits and cereals thanks to funds provided by the City of Rockingham.

Rockingham Beach Primary School YouthCARE Chaplain Deb Cunningham said it was the school’s fifth year taking part in the event, and up to 300 students were involved, walking to school with parents or friends.

“It is a nice way for the kids to interact with staff, because they hand the breakfast out,” she said.

“It teaches the kids that it is important to eat a healthy breakfast before you start the day.”
