Survivor scales heights

Breast cancer survivor Jennifer Jones is so committed to giving back to her support network, she is throwing herself out of a moving plane at 14,000 feet.

The Safety Bay resident is skydiving as part of the Brave for Breast Cancer Network Australia initiative and hopes to fundraise a minimum of $2000 in support.

Mrs Jones was diagnosed in 2004 and after successful treatment has now been cancer-free for 12 years.

“I still keep up to date with BCNA news and came across the opportunity to do some fundraising and take part in a skydive,” she said.

“I am very scared of heights and nervous about the jump but really pleased to give back to the network, which gave me so much help during my cancer diagnosis.”

Mrs Jones will take flight on February 12 next year and land on the Rockingham foreshore.

In a bid to reach her fundraising goal, she has offered to work shifts at local hospitality venues in return for donations. “I have approached a number of restaurants including the Steel Tree, the Beach House Cafe in Wanrbro, Latitude 32 and Kent Street Deli, who have all jumped onboard,” she said.

“I decided to put my hospitality experience to good use and instead of being paid for my time I am asking business owners to donate to my cause.”

The mother-of-three is looking for more businesses to get involved.

Participants in the Brave for BCNA initiative will jump from planes in four locations — Barwon Heads, Brisbane, Rockingham and Wollongong next year.
