Swimming: High tech safety for weekend Crawl

Sound Telegraph

Secret Harbour Surf Life Saving Club will be hosting the 2011Cockburn Crawl Ocean swim this weekend and this year they have some high-tech help in keeping an eye on the swimmers during the event.

Cyber Technology, a WA company that designs and manufactures unmanned aerial vehicles, will be attending the event and will be bringing one of its cyberQuad UAV’s to the swim to enhance the swimmer safety.

The cyberQuad is a small, batterypowered vehicle that can take off and land vertically, allowing it to be flown almost anywhere.

It will be transmitting video images back to the start/finish line and allow organisers to keep an eye on swimmers during the event.

The cyberQuad will also be used before the swim start to do a flyover survey of the course to check for swim conditions and any dangers to the swimmers.

The Cockburn Crawl is a 1600m ocean swim in its fifth year and part of the WA Ocean Swim Series.

Organisers expect about 100 swimmers to take part.
