A passion for fitness and a unique set of leadership skills is the driving force behind Mandurah resident Gerald Ugle.

An accomplished footballer, Mr Ugle hopes to make his mark in the health and fitness industry after being announced as a recipient of the Australian Institute of Personal Trainers Indigenous Scholar-ship.

The 23-year-old was one of just three recipients announced from a pool of Australia-wide nominees.

“I applied for the scholarship because I felt as though I met the criteria pretty well and it’s a great feeling to be chosen,” he said.

“I have always been passionate about health and fitness and I am excited to complete the training and expand my knowledge.

“My love for the gym developed at a young age and I want to be able to use my training to help other people achieve their goals.”

Ugle is captain of the Peel Thunder Football Club after joining the Mandurah-based WAFL team last year.

He spent time playing for the Greater Western Sydney Giants in the AFL and believes staying on top of his fitness is the key to success on the footy field.

“The WAFL is a really competitive league — if you don’t give it everything then other players will take your spot,” he said.

“The better players do the extra training and work hard.”

In addition to his study and football commitments, Mr Ugle also works the rest of his time working as a youth officer with the Street Net Youth Service.

“I enjoy being a role model,” he said.

“I realised a long time ago that I wanted to be a good leader for my community and my brothers and sisters.”

“I hope that if I can pass on my knowledge and leadership skills to them they can go ahead and achieve their goals.”
