Tranby students get interactive at Malibu

CARA TREGONNINGSound Telegraph

It was smiles all round last Thursday as Year 9 Tranby College students visited Malibu Special School for an interactive sports and games morning.

The visit was part of Tranby College’s service program which focuses on volunteering within the school and out in the community.

Malibu physical education specialist Debbie Flynn said the sports mornings were a big hit.

“They’re (the students) very enthusiastic and always ask about it,” she said. “When the Tranby kids get here they run out.”

Ms Flynn said physical activity helped students with special needs gain physical skills and confidence.

“Our kids don’t always have many opportunities for out of school sports, so the more they can get in school, the better,” she said.

Tranby College service co-ordinator Angela Gileno said the program worked to bridge the gap between mainstream and specialised schools.

“The students get an opportunity to learn about different people in the community,” she said.

“Some of the boys were dragging their feet at first because they were pushed out of their comfort zone, but now they’re loving it.

“They don’t know what they’re capable of until they’re put into a situation where they’re tested.”

Year 9 Tranby College student Carter Rogers said the Malibu students were always happy to see them.

Ms Gileno said she hoped to continue weekly sports mornings next term.
