Trump Card takes out both heats

JOHN PERCYSound Telegraph

It was another beautiful day on the water as crews enjoyed some close racing in a steady 10-15 knot south westerly.

The Yvonne catamarans contested the third and fourth heats of the State championship series and it was Trump Card, sailed by Shane and Jason Phillips, that won both races by convincing margins.

Racing in the Flying Ant fleet was close and keenly contested as the boats geared up for the State selection series, to be held over November 23 and 24 at the Cruising Yacht Club.

In the division 3 race, Bonanza was still hanging on her genoa within one minute to the start and video evidence showed Anelaua had the best start.

In the light conditions, No Drama beat the big cat, Halcyon Days, to the windward mark, which was quite an achievement. The sea breeze gave crews a chance to practice their tacks and spinnaker sets without being punished for mistakes by a strong breeze.

Port tacker No Drama misjudged how much room Lokman was leaving and took a penalty turn when it tangled with the windward mark on the second lap.

The breeze remained gentle all afternoon and Bonanza led the monohulls home. Lokman won the tussle with Ruffian and No Drama for second monohull place.

These three yachts crossed the finish line within 50 seconds.

Next weekend, yachts from Fremantle Sailing Club come down in the morning to compete in the Classic Race.
