Video takes on gambling

In an effort to break stereotypes about problem gambling and who is at risk, Rockingham headspace is launching its Beyond Gambling Youth Awareness Campaign on December 7.

Earlier this year, 360 Health + Community approached the branch's Youth Reference Group to help target problem gambling, after receiving funding from the State Government's Beyond Gambling program.

The YRG decided a video would be the best way to gain the attention of the target group - 14 to 20-year-olds - and so began scripting, casting and filming with the help of a Rockingham production team.

Group member Brix Ottaway said the 10-minute video showcased three scenarios of youth engaging in gambling, explaining what it looked like, who were common influences and promoting ways individuals could seek support.

Anecdotally, she said it was an issue but there were no statistics available in WA.

"It becomes a problem when it affects everyday life; it's not about don't gamble, but helping people to know how to be safe and responsible," Miss Ottaway said.

Rockingham headspace youth project worker Nikayla Crisp said scratchies, casino games and sports betting had become more of an issue in younger people because of the ease of accessibility through smart phones.

"Gambling might be an escape, to cope or try and make money, instead of for entertainment," she said.

She encouraged people to join in the launch of the video, which included youth-friendly supporting materials, at the Warnbro Swans Football Club on Monday at 5pm.
