Vigil for Iveta
Amid the sounds of Iveta Mitchell’s favourite music, AC/DC and the Screaming Jets, a candlelight vigil was held at Barney Park, Parmelia, to mark the one-year anniversary of her disappearance.
A relaxed crowd of about 80 friends, family and neighbours gathered to honour the mother of three and as a bid to jog people’s memories, hopefully bringing new information on her whereabouts.
The vigil was organised by her close friend Sinki Nikcolic in the place she was last seen on May 3, 2010 after an argument with her husband Chad Mitchell.
Mrs Mitchell was last seen by her husband as she walked across the park next to their home.
Her husband and both sons, Kyle and Peter, did not go to the vigil, although Mrs Mitchell’s 14-year-old daughter Alana attended.
The event was also attended by two of Mrs Mitchell’s other close friends, Kim Skinner and Tammy Dewaayer.
The friends shared tears but also laughter.
‘‘She is our good friend, fun and outgoing—we want her back,’’ they said.
MsNikcolic asked thosewhohad gathered to place their candles on a path to ‘‘represent a path to hope’’.
Ms Dewaayer read a poem expressing the deep emotional connection with her friend and the sorrow her disappearance had brought to her family and friends.
''We miss you so much, our dear friend, we are here till the very end,
Not a day goes by we don’t think of you,
Your beautiful kids are exactly like you,
You would be so proud of what they have become,
But not an hour goes by that they don’t miss their mum,
We love and miss you, mate.''
Ms Skinner said the friends were pleased with the event.
‘‘We just would like to thank everyone for coming — the main idea was to spark everyone’s memory for any new information,’’ she said.
‘‘It’s been well supported, it’s been awesome.’’
If anyone knows anything, they are urged to come forward and contact police on 131 444.
