The National Heart Foundation of Australia has encouraged men in Rockingham and Kwinana to take steps towards good heart health by joining a registered local walkers’ group.

Rockingham senior Brian Yates is proof regular walking can have a positive effect on health as he remains fighting fit despite several health scares.

The retiree said he and his wife Margaret set up the Careeba Park Pole Walkers group five years ago after taking part in research into seniors exercise at the University of Notre Dame Australia. The couple have embarked on three 40-minute walks per week since — while holding poles — and reported many benefits.

“The research discovered walking with poles was much better cardiovascular exercise,” Mr Yates said.

“We have always tried to keep fit and walking benefits the whole body.”
