Warriors set to compete in surf event

Junior lifesavers from Secret Habour Surf Life Saving Club are ready to hit the sand running at the 2015 Medibank Wave Warriors Junior Challenge at Mullaloo Beach on Sunday.

Some 28 nippers from the club will head to the beach in Perth's northern suburbs to take part in the WA leg of the nationwide event.

Created by champion ironman Zane Holmes, the challenge is a beach and surf spectacular designed to mirror the famous Kellogg's Ironman series and features separate events in each State throughout the summer.

Holmes, who has a 40-year family involvement in surf lifesaving and is the most successful ironman in history, said the competition was about participation and fun and encouraged the youngest athletes to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

"The concept of Wave Warriors was born out of a frustration for the lack of quality events on offer for nippers across the country," he said.

"My goal was to create a unique ocean and beach spectacular for juniors so they can come toge- ther from around Australia to participate in an exciting competition."

Wave Warriors is open to competitors from under-nines to under 15s and has events across all surf sport disciplines including a beach sprint, beach flags, a surf race and a board race.

New to each Wave Warriors event this season is the Medibank Ocean Swim Run, open to everyone, aged five to 60+ and features a 200m swim and a 2km beach run.

The Wave Warriors Junior Challenge was named Best Sporting Event in Queensland and Western Australia in the 2014 Australian Event Awards and is a national finalist in 2015.
