Sound Telegraph

Story of Heroism Marred by Murder

The story of Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang—Australia’s most infamous bushrangers—has been documented for children in a colourful picture book called Ned Kelly and the Green Sash.

The narrative, non-fiction book shares the story of a young Ned, once hailed a hero after saving the life of a drowning classmate.

He was awarded a green silk sash for his heroism.

Yet, within a few years, he became an outlaw who was eventually hanged for murder.

Backed by detailed research, the text also includes brief biographies and fact files on the Kelly Gang, the true story behind the green sash and a detailed list of sources.

It is a fresh take on a fascinating and historically significant Australian story, written by Mark Greenwood and illustrated by Frane Lessac.

Used as a teaching resource for schools, Ned Kelly and the Green Sash won the 2011 Hoffman Award.
