Wood’s working well for Danny

BRIAN OLIVERSound Telegraph

Creating animal-themed wood carvings has been the best therapy for Kwinana’s Danny Davies.

The father-of-four, who has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, said he enjoyed being able to express himself through woodwork.

“Pretty much anything to do with woodwork and animals and all that sort of thing … it’s just in my heart,” he said. “Basically I get outside and do as much as I can to just get that little bit of space.”

Mr Davies left school when he was 15 and went from job to job, but after working with timber flooring, it sparked a passion for wood.

His collection of carvings includes dinosaurs and sea creatures, including fish and whales.

The 35-year-old, who has been on a disability pension for four years, said although he found it easy to create the art, he had not yet sold or marketed any of his creations.

He hoped other people with a disability in Kwinana would be interested in forming an arts group and network.

“Hopefully, we can get more links and groups in the local area,” he said.
