Young Stingrays shine again

YVONNE BEVANSound Telegraph

Rockingham Stingrays Swimming Club members came out on top against the State’s best age and open swimmers at this year’s Swimming WA Short Course Championships.

The season’s pinnacle event played host to almost 700 competitors with over 4000 individual entries — the second biggest swimming competition in the State this year. Sixteen of the Stingrays completed a total 127 races between them and registered 104 personal bests.

Medal winners included Avalon Browne, Isabelle Jeminson, Austin McAleese, Ethan McAleese, Bianca Russell and Kirralee Shepherd. Club coach Gordon Shaw said that the young brigade had trained hard over the winter break and it was noticeable in last weekend’s results.

‘‘Over the four days of intense competition our swimmers achieved an outstanding combined improved personal best rate of 82 per cent,’’ Gordon said.
