Alcoa scholarship applications open

Alcoa is encouraging teenagers with a passion for the environment to apply for a scholarship which could see them jetting off to the United States to experience field science expeditions in Yosemite National Park or Shenandoah National Park.

Students aged 16 to 18 years are invited to apply for the Alcoa Foundation scholarship for a chance to be part of a two-week program in July and August, hosted by not-for-profit organisation NatureBridge.

The program is designed to develop future environmental leaders as it takes students on a challenging physical and academic journey.

Scholars will participate in a multi-day backpacking adventure, conduct hands-on science projects, help take care of the national park through a service project, and explore environmental issues from a global perspective.

Successful applicants will be among 55 young people from all over the world.

The scholarship covers the full cost of the program, flights and, if necessary, passport and visa applications.

Since its inception in 2014, the program has connected more than 230 like-minded teenagers from around the world, including 40 from Australia, who have built lifelong friendships.

Safety Bay Senior High School student Kaitlin Pike said the highlight of her experience was sharing the adventure with other scholars and NatureBridge educators.

“I also experienced new adventures, new challenges and new cultures. I have gained friends, a stronger love for the environment, knowledge, a desire to try new things and so much more.”
