Residents in Perth’s northern suburbs are being warned that their commute to work may take a little longer this week as works begin on upgrading a busy freeway on-ramp.

Cedric Street entry ramp to Mitchell Freeway northbound will be closed 9am to 3pm from Monday (April 7) to Friday (April 11).

Main Roads WA confirmed that detours would be in place via Odin and Karrinyup roads.

The upgrades are part of the Stephenson Avenue extension.

The extension will provide “a new connection from Cedric Street to Scarborough Beach Road, including an interchange at Mitchell Freeway with a southbound Smart Freeway on-ramp, as well as new local road links to Ellen Stirling Boulevard”.

The major road project got a $74.6 million funding boost from the Federal Government in December, with Treasurer Jim Chalmers saying it was important to accommodate the increased cost of construction materials and labour shortages.

“Our job has been really to make sure that we have a realistic assessment of where the slippage is in the pipeline and that we account for that, but that we also make sure we’re accommodating these cost pressures at the same time as new projects get added to the pipeline,” he said.
