Cheer dance team off to nationals

Safety Bay Senior High School’s Warriors cheer team will jet off to Melbourne tomorrow to compete in the Australian All Stars Cheerleading Federation’s National Cheer and Dance Championships.

A part of the school’s Cheer Dance Specialist Program about 30 students from Years 7 to 12 will be competing against more than 12,000 competitors from across the country vying for the title.

The competition will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from Friday, November 29 to Sunday, December 1.

Safety Bay Senior High School are proud to have the only level three scholastic competition team competing at the event, which comes off the back of a stellar run for the Warriors at the Aussie Gold State Spectacular, Australian All Stars Cheerleading Federation State Competition and the All Things Cheer Starz Championship held earlier this year.

The team is hoping their results can be repeated on the national stage as they vie for top spots in level three cheer, hip hop, poms and stunt groups.

Cheer Dance Specialist Program coordinator Elise Holton said competing at national level required dedication, hard work and many hours of training.

“I am so proud of our girls for putting in the hard work to get us to Nationals and I cannot wait to see them all smash it on the floor,” she said.

“This has taken countless hours of training to get the routines down and I am sure the Warriors will do us and the school proud.”

Head of the Arts Melissa Wiltshire, who is also travelling with the team as one of the coaches, said it was a fantastic opportunity to showcase what the Cheer-Dance Specialist Program has to offer.

“It is such a unique opportunity for students to be competing at this elite level as part of our specialist program, which encourages and develops their leadership skills at the same time.

She said the calibre of this year’s Warriors travel team was “a real testament” to the dedication of the girls.
