City considers more dump points

The City of Rockingham is examining the potential provision of public dump points to be used by travellers in motorhomes passing through the region, while a local businessman has stated added caravan park facilities are needed.

Rockingham RV Centre owner Jim Groves said he was asked frequently by tourists and people travelling through the city about caravan park facilities.

“Every day people ring and ask where the dump sites are; people are driving straight past us and going to Mandurah,” he said.

“When tourists are travelling they will get onto Google and find the dump sites. Wherever they are, that is where they are going to stay.

“The more we have got, the better off we are. We need a couple of caravan parks that are serious about it.”

Mr Groves contacted the Rockingham Kwinana Chamber of Commerce in relation to the issue.

Chamber executive board member Caroline Hume said Mr Groves had the organisation’s support and that improved caravan park facilities would bring more people to Rockingham.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the statement that there were no caravan parks with a dump site within the City of Rockingham is not correct.

“All caravan parks within the City require a dump point for park users as per the Caravan Park and Camping Ground Regulations 1997 – Reg 47,” he said.

“However they are only available for occupants of the caravan park and not for general use.

“The provision of public dump points in the City of Rockingham is currently being investigated as it has been identified that this type of facility may attract caravans and motorhomes into the city.

“Public dump points are likely to need approval from the Water Corporation and will need to meet specific requirements related to the zoning and development approval of the property.”
