Couple celebrate 50 years of love, laughter together

It was a golden event when a Rockingham couple celebrated an important milestone last week.

Betty and Sydney Taylor celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Friday surrounded by family.

The couple have lived in Rockingham for 20 years and spend their days gardening and walking, and their nights playing eye spy before bed.

Mr Taylor, who is 91, said he didn’t think they would last so long but was very happy that they had.

“We’ve had a happy life with not many arguments — love one another, that’s the main thing,” he said.

The pair were married in New Zealand in the same church as Mrs Taylor’s mother before relocating to WA together.

Seventy-eight-year-old Mrs Taylor said it was special to celebrate the occasion with their family.

“I say the most important thing is to always have love and laughter in your life and never go to bed with anger in your heart,” she said.

“He is just the most wonderful person you could ever wish for — he hasn’t lost his sense of humour, he makes me laugh every day.

“I came over to Australia on a holiday with mum and he was with some of our family at the airport and I thought, ‘who is that young man over there’ and five weeks later I went home engaged.

“There was just an electricity between us straight away, it was just incredible — we’ve been one of the lucky couples, I think.”
