Former Rockingham Flames star Sami Whitcomb has played a crucial role off the bench this morning to help Seattle Storm to the WNBA Finals.

Whitcomb contributed a valuable 11 points, four assists and three rebounds to help spark the Storm to a come-from-behind 94-84 win over Phoenix Mercury in their game five semifinal series decider.

It was just the third time this season Whitcomb scored in double figures, but her 21 minutes represented the second highest minutes she spent on the court in a game this season.

The former Perth Lynx player and two-time women’s State Basketball League champion and three-time WSBL grand final MVP hit two of three from beyond the arc and also blocked a Yvonne Turner shot in the third quarter when the Storm were still chasing the match.

Fellow Australian international Leilani Mitchell, who beat out Whitcomb for the only naturalised player slot in the Opals squad for the Women’s FIBA World Cup later this month, played less than two minutes for the Mercury and did not trouble the statisticians.

Whitcomb will next suit up for the Storm in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals series against Washington Mystics on Saturday morning (AWST).
