Gong for Stingers skipper

Safety Bay Stingers Football Club player Scott Corbett has capped off a fine season, after recently being awarded the Randall Medal as the best and fairest player in division one of the Metro Football League.

The centre-half back, who also captains the Stingers’ league team, picked up the award in a season that has seen the Safety Bay Club make it all the way to the grand final.

Corbett, who has been a mainstay for the Stingers since joining the club 15 years ago as an under-12 player, said he was surprised but ultimately proud of the achievement.

“It came as a real surprise,” Corbett said.

“I didn’t think I’d be in with a chance at all.

“I was just hoping for a couple of votes but I heard my name a few times and started to get a bit nervous towards the end.

“I led for most of the way and was waiting to be caught up. I got three votes for the last game and ended up winning by two votes.”

With more than 250 junior and senior games for the club, Corbett also has the honour of making the most appearances in blue and white of any player.

Corbett’s success was also marked with the club being recognised as the best managed in the league, a fine achievement considering it is only the first season they have played in the MFL.

This weekend Corbett will lead his side into battle in a grand final to be played at Robinson Reserve in Tuart Hill.

Having already beaten their opponents this season, Corbett said the team should be pretty confident of victory if they played their best football.
