Modified, custom, performance and show vehicle owners will get the chance to drive the streets of Kwinana next month in the inaugural Custom Coastal Cruise, an event which needed the approval of local police, council and the Department of Transport in order to run.

The event will kick off from The Kwinana Local.

Organiser Chad Douglas said he had worked on similar events in Canberra and Alice Springs, and wanted to bring something to WA car enthusiasts.

“I approached the Department of Transport with the idea, who gave me a large list of requirements and approvals needed from council and local police,” he said.

“I began with the Rockingham Hotel who unfortunately won’t be open by the 12th of September so we moved the start and end point to The Kwinana Local.

“Senior Sergeant Neville Beard couldn’t have been more helpful and has co-ordinated with the Kwinana and Mandurah police and had helpful suggestions for the proposed route as well.”

The event will be run with specifically generated permits for otherwise unregistered and highly modified cars.

“The cruise will be from The Kwinana Local, along the Rockingham coastal drive and down to Mandurah where we will stop for lunch at The Cut Tavern, which also hosts the Cars At The Cut chrome bumper and hotrod shows during summer months,” Mr Douglas said.

“We will then return through Mandurah along the Mandurah Terrace foreshore strip and back to The Local.

“My initial thoughts were we may attract 50 cars at the most but I have been inundated with requests for applications.

“The end number will be reliant on the weather but it should be great opportunity for any number of entrants with normally registered chrome bumper cars able to come along as well.”

Mr Douglas said the drivers brief would start at 10am in the car park at The Kwinana Local and the drivers would leave after that.

“I would suggest the cars would make the Rockingham foreshore by roughly 10.20am if spectators would like to see them in progression,” he said.

Mr Douglas thanked police, council , Department of Transport and the venues that made the event possible.
