Kwinana Skatepark now open

Kwinana’s hotly anticipated the Edge Skatepark is now officially open, with the remaining construction fences coming down earlier this week.

The $1.5 million state-of-the-art facility was designed for maximum inclusiveness, for a range of sports and participants of all ages and abilities.

The 1800sqm park is home to a range of zones for skateboarding, scooters, BMX, rollerblading, parkour and basketball, with amenities including phone-charging stations, drink fountains, bins, lighting, seating and a shelter.

City of Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams said the council was incredibly proud to offer the facilities to the community.

“The Edge Skatepark is yet another exciting addition to our youth precinct in Kwinana’s City Centre,” she said.

“This much-anticipated facility will encourage physical activity and offer a positive social space for young people.

“The park will be enjoyed by a diversity of users for many years to come including families, teens and serious skaters.

“We anticipate that the Edge Skatepark will attract regional-level competitions and events like never before in Kwinana, bringing in visitors from outside the area.”

The Edge Skatepark was designed in consultation with local skaters, young people and parents, with a reference group set up to provide input throughout the design process.

Elements of Kwinana’s rich industrial history and character is reflected throughout the park through the use of metal textures and steel pipework, as well as the colour scheme - based off the ocean and natural environment.

Pylons recovered from the Kwinana Jetty were also incorporated into the new precinct as sculptures to pay homage to the jetty, which was irreparably destroyed in a storm in 2012.
