New $1m Baldivis playground to draw on area’s milling history

A new $1 million adventure playground to be built in North Baldivis will celebrate the area’s early association with trains and timber milling.

The playground will be built by developer Cedar Woods at their North Baldivis estate Millars Landing and is set to open in October.

Plan E associate landscape architect Jo Olive, who helped design the playground, said it drew inspiration from the story of Millars Landing and its history.

“The two main features of the playground are a tall tower reminiscent of an old steam train water stop tower, and a large train climbing structure with opportunities for imaginative play,” she said.

“Picnic facilities under bespoke shade structures and large trees overlook the central play space and adjacent kick about turf areas.

“Other materials within the play space - such as robust timber furniture, railway sleepers and steel - reinforce the railway theme and heritage of the site. The large playground has a variety of other play items suitable for all ages and abilities, providing opportunities of enjoyment for the whole community.”

Cedar Woods state manager Ben Rosser said they were delighted to offer a distinctive playground for Baldivis families, which celebrated the connection of Baldivis to its history.

“Millars Landing takes its name from the historic 1920s tramway reserve that was planned to transport milled timber from the area to Rockingham and Fremantle for the Millars Timber & Co Trading Company,” Mr Rosser said.

“We are proud to be connected to the rich heritage of Baldivis. This playground will bring families together and help connect them to their neighbourhood through showcasing its history.”
